2013 One Michilin Star – Michinlin Star Guide Beijing 2022

In collaboration with acclaimed London restaurateur Alan Yau, we created Jing Yaa Tang, his first restaurant in China — a reinterpretation of the traditional Beijing roast duck experience infused with modern sensibility and dramatic flair.

Nestled within The Opposite House, a boutique hotel in the fashionable Sanlitun district of Beijing, Jing Yaa Tang’s name, meaning “an elegant room of classic refinement,” embodies the restaurant’s vision — to elevate the dining experience into an art form of timeless elegance.

The spatial layout is centered around an open kitchen designed as a stage, allowing guests to witness the chefs’ mastery of the roasting process as part of an immersive, theatrical dining experience. Here, gastronomy becomes performance — each guest both diner and spectator, embraced by a choreography of craftsmanship, flavor, and light.

THE MOMENT OF DEPARTURE

Nestled within The Opposite House in Beijing’s lively Sanlitun district, the hotel rises as a modern icon — a dialogue between tradition, innovation, and the rhythm of the city.

INSPIRATION IN MOTION

The capital carries the timeless echoes of Chinese opera — a stage where history, art, and spirit intertwine. Just as the opera captures the soul of the city through drama and song, Peking duck embodies its essence through flavor and ritual.

We imagine a space where these two icons meet: the theatre becomes our canvas, its lights rising on the star of the stage

The glistening Peking duck. Beneath the spotlight, it takes its bow, a performance of taste and tradition, inviting guests to savor Beijing’s story in every bite.

THE SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY

Stepping into Jin Yaa Tang feels like entering a traditional Chinese opera house, where elegance mingles with a quiet sense of excitement. The space invites guests to observe and be observed, creating a theatre of dining that remains both refined and re-spectful.

At the heart of the restaurant, dining becomes a performance — the guest is the protagonist, while waiters, waitresses, and dishes all play their roles upon the stage.

The design weaves traditional Chinese details into a modern inter-pretation. Warm light filters through agate-finished screens, casting a gentle glow that softens the atmosphere, wrapping the experience in comfort and ease.

THE VOYAGE BETWEEN

As guests take their leave, they carry with them more than the memory of a meal — they depart with the grandeur of a feast and the artistry of a performance, etched into their senses.

The experience of Jin Yaa Tang endures as a timeless impression, awaiting to be re-kindled with each return to Beijing.
